Itinerary


9am

Head west towards Armagh.

10am

St. Patrick’s Trian
Discover the Armagh story at the Trian.

Palace Stables Heritage Centre
Visit the Archbishop’s chapel, ice-house and underground tunnel and enjoy living history displays and re-enactments.

12noon

Drive through the Mournes
Depart Armagh and travel through the Mourne Mountains, the landscape that supposedly inspired C.S. Lewis' Narnia stopping for lunch en route in Banbridge or Castlewellan.

2.30pm

St. Patrick Centre, Downpatrick
The centre provides a great insight into the land of Saints and Scholars and is home to an exhibition on St. Patrick.

4pm

Down Cathedral
Although the present Cathedral was consecrated in 1818. It is generally accepted that the main walls of the cathedral date from the years after 1220.

St. Patrick’s Trian
Unlock the secrets of the Book of Armagh through a fascinating interactive display and learn about the life of St. Patrick from this manuscript dating from the 9th century.  
  Palace Stables
Experience Georgian life by stepping back to 1786 at the Palace Stables Heritage Centre. 
     
Mourne Mountains
The Mournes are 12 rugged peaks, crisscrossed by dry stone walls. The mountains including Slieve Donard, the highest in Northern Ireland, provide superb scenery and wonderful walks. 
  St. Patrick Centre
Discover how Ireland’s patron saint spread his legacy throughout Europe and learn about the development of intricate artwork and metalwork in early Christian times.
     
Down Cathedral
Not only was St. Patrick buried here in 461AD but so too were the remains of Ireland’s other saints, Brigid and Columba (Columcille).The Memorial Stone was placed in 1900. 
   

It is in the Cathedral City of Armagh, within the “Orchard County”, where Saint Patrick chose a hilltop site as a base from which to spread Christianity in Ireland. In County Down, visitors can learn more about his life and legacy and visit his grave.
